Police did not pursue two teenagers before they were involved in a fatal moped crash in Kent, an initial investigation has revealed.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is investigating after an 18-year-old died in the collision near the Sheppey Leisure Complex shortly before 19:50 GMT on Saturday.

A 16-year-old boy remains in hospital with life-threatening injuries, an IOPC spokesperson said.

The IOPC said Kent Police officers on foot had seen the vehicle before the crash and tried to approach it.

The rider then drove away and the vehicle crashed a short time later.

The watchdog said officers are currently being treated as witnesses.

IOPC director of engagement Emily Barry said: "It's important we establish all the circumstances surrounding this incident and our investigation is in the very early stages."

A post-mortem examination was carried out on Wednesday and a date for the inquest has yet to be confirmed.
