A footbridge across the River Hull will be closed for two weeks for maintenance work, the council has said.

In 2024, an inspection revealed Scale Lane bridge's bespoke swing mechanism was in need of repair. It was closed earlier this year for further inspections.

The works, which are taking place from 3 November until 18 November, will include the replacement of key connection bolts within its swing mechanism.

The footbridge will be closed to pedestrians and cyclists, reopening in time for the Christmas light switch-on in the city centre, Hull City Council said.

Engineers will also be carrying out tests to gather data about how the structure is balanced and how it performs.

The council said the work would mean the bridge could return to routine openings, which are currently limited to essential river traffic and emergency situations.

During the closure, a signed diversion will be in place via Millennium Footbridge. Pedestrians and cyclists will also be able to use Drypool Bridge to cross the river.

Councillor Mark Ieronimo said: "We'd like to thank residents and local businesses for their patience and understanding as we carry out these works to improve the reliability of this vital crossing for years to come."
