A man is in a critical condition in hospital after being attacked in a city centre, police have said.

Thames Valley Police was called by paramedics shortly after 01:50 GMT after the man, in his 20s, was assaulted in Midsummer Boulevard in Milton Keynes.

A statement from the force said: "The victim sustained serious injuries and remains in hospital in a critical condition."

"We are conducting a number of fast-time enquiries to establish exactly what happened and identify those responsible," added Det Insp Luke Pratt.

"I would urge anyone who was in the area around Midsummer Boulevard and The Hub between 01:00 and 02:00 this morning to come forward if they witnessed anything suspicious.

"Even the smallest piece of information could prove vital in helping us understand what happened and identify those involved," he added.

There will be an increased police presence around The Hub and residents "with any concerns could speak to officers".

The force has appealed for any witnesses or anyone with video footage or information to contact them.
