    Somerset 469 v Essex 158 & 63-0

Somerset hold back Jack Leach as paceman Jake Ball is entrusted with the second over of the day.

He squares up Dean Elgar with a good one but a thick edge doesn't carry to the gully fielder.

Only high 70s in terms of speed but Elgar is unable to add to his 33 not out.

We've got a one innings shootout at Grace Road. Our Division One cowboys set for an enticing duel.

With just one run separating both teams' first innings totals, this game will come down to who handles a two-tone pitch with plenty of movement and uneven bounce, the best.

Leicestershire clearly had seen enough of dodging, blocking and ducking, and started shooting from the hip. Rishi Patel's swashbuckling 26 backed up by Sheridon Gumbs' 33* - the latter could hold the key for The Foxes.

They feel like they are close to last-chance saloon, defeat here and they are in trouble. Victory though might see them mount a survival challenge.

Glamorgan, meanwhile, may feel they are slightly behind the game. Their bowlers weren't firing accurately yesterday afternoon, and a title tilt may hang in the balance should they not take early wickets today.

Who will head off into the sunset on horseback then? We shall see...

  3. Play under way at Southamptonpublished at 11:05 BST 22 August

    Hampshire 197 v Yorkshire 173 & 135-5

The evergreen Kyle Abbott wraps James Wharton on the pads in his first over of the day but it looked potentially that it was sliding down leg.

A maiden to begin with at the Utilita Bowl for the Hampshire seamer.

    Haynes lbw b Worrall 34 (Surrey 162 v Notts 184 & 147-4 - lead by 169)

First over at The Oval and there is the first wicket!

Dan Worrall begins tidily, swinging the ball away from Jack Haynes for the first five deliveries of the morning and the sixth is a little straighter but still nips away and raps Haynes on the pad.

Looks good and the umpire obliges!

  5. Postpublished at 11:04 BST 22 August

    Warks 161 v Sussex 156 & 84-3

Chris Woakes has ball in hand for Warwickshire.

A couple of early breakthroughs and the Bears could be fancying their chances of wrapping this one up today.

Woakes starts with a maiden to James Coles.

  6. Play under way at Derbypublished at 11:02 BST 22 August

    Derbyshire 127-6 v Durham 283

Durham's Matthew Potts gets us under way at Derby and it's a swing and a miss outside off-stump to start things off from Ben Aitchison.

  7. Play under way at Tauntonpublished at 11:01 BST 22 August

    Somerset 469 v Essex 158 & 59-0

Jack Leach could be the main danger man again for Somerset today following his four wickets on day two.

But it's Archie Vaughan who has the ball first up as Dean Elgar and Paul Walter resume for Essex, with their side 252 in arrears.

Avoiding the loss of early wickets is key for the visitors. Spin torment awaits.

  9. 'High-risk cricket can work for Glamorgan' - Cranepublished at 10:59 BST 22 August

    Leicestershire 151 & 79-2 v Glamorgan 151 - Leics lead by 78

Glamorgan batter Mason Crane makes his way off the pitch with his bat under his armImage source, Shutterstock

Mason Crane's 44 proved the highest score of any Glamorgan batter in their match against Leicestershire - and it has left a one-innings scenario at Grace Road.

Crane's knock lifted Glamorgan up to 152 in their first innings, a reply to Leicestershire's 151. Overnight, Leicestershire are 79-2 and with the match firmly in the balance.

“It's pretty unusual to top score with 44 but it's one of those games where crazy things happen, so I'm pretty happy with our position," Crane said. "The pitch is doing enough, it felt like that throughout the innings. You've got to bowl well, you've got to put it in the right area, but it seems like there's plenty there.

“Sometimes in low-scoring games, high-risk cricket can work and hopefully that can work in our favour and we get a few wickets there.

"It’s one of those games where you can take risks. If it comes off, it looks like it's a good thing to do and if it doesn't come off, it's the wrong thing to do. It's an interesting game but it's poised nicely."

Ben Stokes was the star attraction at Derby on Friday as he made 53 in Durham's 283 and then took 2-14 in four overs as Derbyshire were reduced to 127-6 by the close.

He also went off the field for a period so it will be interesting to see if he appears on the third morning.

Kent begin day three with a 139-run lead over Middlesex after a fast-moving day at Northwood. Their first innings of 350 was backed up by nine wickets from Matts, Milnes and Quinn, as Middlesex were bowled out for 249.

But two quick wickets of Zak Crawley, for a duck, and Sam Northeast, have kept the home side in the contest.

George Bartlett's 92 was the bedrock of Northants' above-par 284 away to Lancashire, who had reached 68-2 at the close. The home side's youthful middle order will certainly be put to the test by wily veterans Ben Sanderson and Luke Procter.

And at Cheltenham, Worcestershire open up with a 55-run advantage over Gloucestershire at 205-7 as they aim to build up what could be a crucial halfway lead.

  11. 'We know what is required' - Stonepublished at 10:55 BST 22 August

    Surrey 162 v Notts 184 & 147-3 - lead by 169

Nottinghamshire seamer Olly Stone posted his best figures for the club in their first innings at Surrey.

After Notts had been bowled out for 184, Stone led the counter attack and claimed 6-44 to ensure that they maintained a small lead before batting again.

Notts resume 169 runs ahead with seven second innings wickets remaining, as they aim to build up a lead at which Stone and co can bowl. Joe Clarke (37*) and Jack Haynes (34*) return to the middle having put on an unbeaten 70 last night for the fourth wicket.

“We said at the start of the day that if we could get a lead going into our second innings batting, no matter how small it was, it could be crucial," Stone said.

“We hunted as a pack to take those wickets which is rewarding. We know what is required of us.

"We know as an attack that if we keep staying relentless, from start to finish, the wicket will give us our rewards and then that partnership at the end was vital to try and get us ahead of the game.”

  12. 'We're confident to defend anything' - Hillpublished at 10:53 BST 22 August

    Hampshire 197 v Yorkshire 173 & 135-5 - lead by 111

Yorkshire all-rounder George HillImage source, Shutterstock

Yorkshire's George Hill is expecting the opening session on day three to play a big part in the result between his side's match against relegation rivals Hampshire.

The all-rounder took figures of 5-29 as the White Rose skittled their hosts out three runs shy of 200 and closed on 135-5 in their second innings, leading by 111 with James Wharton (17*) and Matthew Revis (4*) returning to the crease at 11:00 BST.

"I feel like if we got on a roll with the bowlers we've got, I think sort of within reason, we're pretty confident to go out and defend anything," said Hill. "We'd love to see how the first session goes tomorrow and then sort of build from there. But yes, anything around (a lead of) 200, I reckon.

"Hopefully, we get through that first session tomorrow."

Yorkshire started their second innings strongly but lost Adam Lyth for 51 - and then two nightwatchmen in Ben Cliff and Jafer Chohan were dismissed late on day two.

Hill's analysis that the start of day three could prove pivotal seems accurate, not only for Yorkshire's chances of victory in the match but potentially for their Division One status as well, with Hampshire currently 17 points below them just inside the relegation places.

  13. Essex must avoid 'poor thinking and poor shots'published at 10:52 BST 22 August

    Somerset 469 v Essex 158 & 59-0

Essex opener Dean ElgarImage source, Shutterstock

Essex need to show pride to have a chance of avoiding an innings defeat after following on against Somerset at Taunton, according to batting coach Tom Huggins.

Openers Dean Elgar and Paul Walter negotiated 19 overs in Friday's final session but will resume on day three with a 252-run deficit to clear.

"Our first innings was a bit of a disaster with some poor thinking and poor shots," said Huggins. "We talk a lot about pride and it is only natural that the players who failed in the first innings will want to make amends. If they do, we are still in the game.”

Somerset are taking nothing for granted despite their dominant position and the pitch offering turn for the spinners, and wicketkeeper James Rew said: "We know what a strong side Essex are and the way they batted in the final session shows we have to keep bowling well."

  14. 'These games are brilliant to play in' - Bamberpublished at 10:50 BST 22 August

    Warks 161 v Sussex 156 & 84-3

    Ethan BamberImage source, Shutterstock

Warwickshire's Ethan Bamber expects the final two days to be easier for batting than the first two with their game against Sussex at Edgbaston intriguingly poised.

The visitors will resume 79 runs ahead, but have already lost three wickets in their second innings, with Bamber removing Dan Hughes first ball - his 40th Championship scalp of the summer.

"It's a great game to be involved in. These are the sort of games that are brilliant to play in - two teams near the top of Division One," said Bamber. "The pitch looked slightly truer and more evenly paced later on, so I think the second innings will bring higher scores."

The Bears had earlier eked out a five-run lead with Sean Hunt taking 4-30 for Sussex and he said: "I didn't play much one-day cricket (in order) to be ready for a big shift in this last six games but the rhythm is coming and I've been working hard with James Kirtley in the nets."

    A very good morning!

We are swiftly onto day three of each County Championship match taking place across the country this week, with stories aplenty unfolding across both divisions and, mercifully, without any rain delays anticipated.

Reigning champions Nottinghamshire are locked in battle with Surrey and are looking to press on at The Oval this morning after both sides were bowled out cheaply in their respective first innings.

Fellow title chasers Warwickshire and Somerset are in action too; the Bears will hope for early wickets against Sussex, who have it all to play for at Edgbaston, while Essex resume on 59-0 at Taunton but still trail Somerset by 252 runs.

In Division Two, pacesetters Durham aim to mop up Derbyshire's tail in what has been a rain-affected match, while promotion hopefuls Kent, in their second innings, are 38-2 and lead Middlesex by 139 runs in a nicely poised meeting.

We will be bringing you comprehensive coverage of every match taking place, so stay tuned throughout the day!
